YIL008 Internet diary saves the farm

You need to remember what you’ve done.

You need to remember where you’ve been on the internet. And you need to remember difficult computer steps. You could use a paper notebook – easy to lose. You could use your browser’s history – too hard to re-find.

Best to use an online notebook like Evernote.

Evernote is best because: [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL007 Do You Want to be a Writer? – publish your writing today.

Want to be a Writer?

Publishing your writing has to be one of the big advantages of the internet. You don’t have to find a publisher, or spend big gobs of money printing on paper.

All you need is a computer with an internet connection, and a blog.

My mate Rosemary’s a writer. She meets with other writers at [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL006 Seven Reasons Why Internet Banking is for You

Using the Internet for something as secure as banking is the last thing an Internet new starter is likely to do. However it is the most useful of all the jobs I use the Internet for. I use it at least three times a day.

An important reason for you

Internet banking is secure. If you use password hygiene you can stay trouble-free (* see about passwords below). I have used Internet banking for six years without the slightest hint of trouble.

Other reasons

Internet banking is available [Read the rest of this entry...]

How to Get People Who Hate the Internet Using It

Two people who hate the internet stand out in my memory. One was a hobby farmer in Beverley, West Australia. He was an ex-orchardist and had lots of lovely stories to tell. But when the subject turned to computers, he said “I want to get through my life without ever touching a computer”.

The other is my mate Michael who is [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL004 RSS, a better magazine

How the Passion Gets Into These Posts

Each week a topic is chosen for YourInternetLessons.com. Do I choose it because it’s the next logical step in your internet education? Nah. I look down the list of stuff yet to be written. When I get to the one that excites me, I start writing. So here goes.

StumbleUpon Good, RSS Better

Last week I said StumbleUpon was your internet magazine. Well, it’s good but not very directed. RSS is laser focussed. Let me explain … [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL003 Your Online Magazine

Passion

It’s time for me to inject a bit of passion into these proceedings. My shame, but the part of the internet I use most is surfing. Surfing turns your internet into an online magazine.

Surfing is random, or mildly directed browsing wherever you get taken. The most important web site for this is StumbleUpon. [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL002 Catch 22 – Geeks, how to get the news to newbies

Internet lessons in this Web 2.0 world are easy. You can learn all you need by watching videos, and attending webinars. The least you need is to be able to open and read emails, and click on an link.

However newbies don’t even know how to do this. Newbies pester geeks to show them how to use the internet. Geeks need to be strong and only teach newbies to be able to open and read emails, and click on an link. After that they can [Read the rest of this entry...]

YIL001 Have You Ever Said “I must take internet lessons”?

Nearly a year ago my mate Silvana said “I should learn about computers”. When I asked her what she wanted to do with computers she was a bit unclear, but said she wanted to do desktop publishing. My point is she thought that people mainly used computers for desktop publishing these days.

She was about ten years out! Since then I have talked to lots of computer newbies and they aren’t really sure what computers are used for, just that lots of people are using them, so they want to. So here I am talking about what computers are used for. Put it another way, what you would learn if you took internet lessons. [Read the rest of this entry...]
