How to Get People Who Hate the Internet Using It

Two people who hate the internet stand out in my memory. One was a hobby farmer in Beverley, West Australia. He was an ex-orchardist and had lots of lovely stories to tell. But when the subject turned to computers, he said “I want to get through my life without ever touching a computer”.

The other is my mate Michael who is a God botherer. He believes the internet to be the work of the devil.

What the internet is.

The problem with both Michael and the Beverly guy is that they don’t understand what the internet is. The answer is elusive because it is changing. In my time, it has changed from text-based email and news to video-posting my friends.

How to use the internet is changing so rapidly they have a name for it; New Media. This means that the internet media we use has changed and we’re not sure what it will change to.

Come to the Social

Each new media change was greeted with enthusiasm. Messaging changed to blogs, which changed to social media. Social Media is solely for conversation with new and old friends. Examples are Facebook.com, Friendfeed.com, Twitter.com, StumbleUpon.com, and Seesmic.com.

Only Trained Actors and Psychopaths

My favourite new Social Media is Seesmic.com. It overcomes many drawbacks of other social media. It seems that when you see someones face while they tell their story, you can see into their soul. I like to say that only trained actors and psychopaths can fool you on Seesmic.

What’s Next?

Much as I love Seesmic, I know that we will be changing when a better, newer media comes along. I won’t be giving it up without a struggle!
