Want to be a Writer?

Publishing your writing has to be one of the big advantages of the internet. You don’t have to find a publisher, or spend big gobs of money printing on paper.

All you need is a computer with an internet connection, and a blog.

My mate Rosemary’s a writer. She meets with other writers at the Katharine Susannah Prichard writer’s centre. I have a copy of  ”Stripped Bare”. In it are her short stories and prose. They are about the bush, and the past. They remind me that people from other places and times are thoughtful and creative.

I have a bit of a reputation of shoving technology down people’s necks. Not so with Rosemary. She was quickly sold on the blog idea. We had one up and running in ten minutes.

RosemaryBall.Wordpress.com is working. All Rosemary needs to do is write, easy for her!

What should Rosemary the writer do next?

The new age formula for learning writing is the same as learning anything.

  1. You use the internet to search for blog web pages on your subject.
  2. You assemble these blogs in a blog reader.
  3. You read these blogs for three weeks.

Hey Presto, you’re an expert!

Let’s see how this is done:
  • Searching for writers – My favourite internet search engine is Google. My search phrase was “writing blog”. Here are the results.
  • Assembling blogs in a reader - My favourite internet blog reader is Google Reader. Learn how to set it up here.
  • Read the blogs – this is the hard bit. Retaining the knowledge that comes out of these blogs is as hard now as it was fifty years ago. But at least you have access to up to date, and peer reviewed material.

Go now and learn writing, or whatever you want. Let me know how you go using the comments button below.
